Phenol treatment

What is a phenol treatment?

Phenolization is a procedure in which a chemical, phenol, is used to damage pain nerves, with the goal of reducing pain symptoms. Before this treatment is performed, a test anesthetic is first used. This is a test that temporarily disables pain nerves to assess whether blocking them will be effective. If the trial anesthesia does not provide relief, there is no point in proceeding to phenolization. ".

If there is a positive response to the test anesthesia, phenol is injected very precisely at the affected nerves under ultrasound guidance. This substance temporarily damages the nerves, which can lead to a significant reduction or even complete absence of pain symptoms. It is important that the Phenol is accurately injected at the right place so that no other structures are damaged. Only nerves that provide pain guidance are damaged in a controlled manner. "Sensory nerves" and "force nerves" to the muscles remain intact. The results of treatment can usually last 6 to 12 months.

When are you eligible for phenol treatment?

Phenol treatment is used at GOED Medical Center for patients experiencing pain due to osteoarthritis of the knee, shoulder or hip. This treatment is often used when other treatments such as PRP or hyaluronic acid treatment fail. It can then be an effective way to reduce pain without the need for surgery.
