Hyaluronic acid treatment

Hyaluronic acid treatment stimulates the natural recovery of joints. On this page, you can read more about what this treatment entails, when you are eligible for it and what the possible treatment process entails.

What does a hyaluronic acid treatment do?

Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body and is particularly produced in the capsule of the joint. With osteoarthritis, the body itself no longer makes enough hyaluronic acid, causing the joint fluid to become less viscous. This viscous fluid helps absorb shock better and protect the damaged cartilage.

Hyaluronic acid naturally promotes recovery. Unlike cortisone treatments, hyaluronic acid in the painful joint has no long-term adverse effects.

When do you qualify for hyaluronic acid treatment?

Especially in patients with mild osteoarthritis (mild user damage) and no excessive fluid in the joint, hyaluronic acid has a positive effect.

What does the treatment process with hyaluronic acid look like?

During the initial consultation, you will receive immediate treatment with hyaluronic acid. If there is no noticeable improvement after 6 weeks, the treatment will not be repeated. Do you notice any improvement after 6 weeks? Then we recommend a booster with hyaluronic acid within a few weeks. Do you have no more complaints after 6 weeks? Then we recommend repeating the treatment after 6 months. After 6 months the treatment is finished.

In addition to treatment with hyaluronic acid, we recommend starting an exercise program through our exercise clinic, or through your own physical therapist. The combination of the hyaluronic acid treatment and targeted exercise therapy provides the best long-term results.

The recovery

After treatment with Hyaluronic Acid, you may have a stiff feeling in and around the joint for the first few days. For the first 2 days after treatment, you should not play sports or put heavy strain on the joint. If necessary you can cool the joint. You may take medication such as paracetamol as usual (maximum 4000 mg per day).

Swelling usually goes away on its own and does not affect the final result of the treatment. If the pain and swelling persists for more than 5 days, we advise you to contact us. Do you become ill or develop a fever after the treatment? Please contact us immediately.
