Corticosteroid treatment
Corticosteroid treatment is used to inhibit inflammation in joints. On this page, you can read more about this treatment, when you may be eligible for it and what the possible treatment process entails.
What is corticosteroid treatment?
Corticosteroids are stress hormones produced by the adrenal glands. These hormones play an important role in regulating blood sugar levels and inhibiting inflammatory responses in the body. This is therefore used to inhibit inflammation in joints.
Repeating treatment with corticosteroids can have adverse effects on long-term recovery. Because of this, treatment is often performed only once at GOED Medical Center. A natural alternative is treatment with PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma). This has no adverse effects on the body.
Corticosteroids IA
A corticosteroid injection refers to the administration of corticosteroids via an injection directly into the affected area, such as a joint or tendon, to reduce inflammation and pain. A variation of this treatment is corticosteroid IA. IA here refers to intra-articular administration, meaning the corticosteroids are injected directly into the joint. In both cases, the goal is to reduce inflammation and relieve pain, but corticosteroids IA are used specifically for conditions that affect the joint, such as arthritis.
For whom is this treatment of interest?
This treatment is used in cases of inflammation. This treatment is often performed only once. In fact, at GOED Medical Center, we prefer to avoid corticosteroid treatment altogether. This is because repeating the treatment can have adverse effects on recovery. A natural counterpart to this treatment, is treatment with PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma).
Treatment path
- We establish a personalized treatment plan during a comprehensive intake
- The treatment is applied in conjunction with a local anesthetic. The anesthetic numbs the area for an average of 8-10 hours
- The treatment works within 2 days. You usually notice a decrease in pain within 2 weeks.
- If the symptoms have subsided temporarily but then return, alternative treatment may be considered.
The recovery
After treatment, you can move the joint as usual and may build up your daily exercise. You may experience temporarily more pain after the treatment. For this you can take paracetamol or cool the joint with ice.
