Subacromial pain syndrome

What symptoms do I experience with subacromial pain syndrome?

Subacromial pain syndrome (SAPS), also known as impingement syndrome of the shoulder, is a common cause of pain in the shoulder. Patients often experience pain and restriction in mobility. This is caused by irritation or damage to structures in the subacromial space of the shoulder. The subacromial space is the area between part of the shoulder blade and the head of the upper arm.

How does subacromial pain syndrome occur?

The symptoms of subacromial pain syndrome often come from overuse of the shoulder, poor posture, weak muscles or narrowing of the subacromial space. Imaging studies such as X-rays, ultrasound or MRI may be used to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other shoulder conditions.

How do I get rid of it?

Subacromial pain syndrome can cause pain, discomfort and limitation in shoulder mobility. Paracetamol and anti-inflammatories can reduce the worst pain. After that, treatment usually begins with a physical therapist. However, do you not notice any improvement after seeing the physical therapist? At GOED Medical Center, we offer a number of treatments that are very effective in relieving this pain syndrome.

What can I do myself in terms of prevention and self-care?

To prevent the symptoms of this condition (next time), we recommend that you pay attention to your posture, avoid activities that lead to overuse of the shoulder as much as possible and do regular exercises with the shoulder to keep it strong and flexible.
